Icomb Mast (and Tower)

Though not in the parish of Maugersbury, the communications mast on the Icomb Hill skyline is a very noticeable feature and of great significance to Maugersbury residents!

Thanks to Barbara Lee for the following information:

The mast was built on the site of Guy's Folly, a stone tower built by John Guy of Guy's Farm in Icomb giving him a wonderful view over his land and beyond. Some walls were still in place, but removed to build the mast...wouldn't have been allowed now. Guy's Farm House is still in the centre of the village.

County boundaries have changed. Icomb was once a part of Worcestershire, within Gloucestershire. The tower was reputedly built on the junction of 3 counties, the third being Oxfordshire in an attempt to evade rates.

circa 1970
