This property was once the house of the Station Master and, when first converted to full residential use, was known as The Station Masters House.
At all railway stations, no matter if only a small country branch line, the Station Master was the key authority figure, with entire responsibility for management. The Station Master would have been a well-respected figure with significant social standing in the local community.
Stow-on-the-Wold was on the Cotswold line of The Great Western Railway (GWR), a British railway company that linked London with the southwest, west and West Midlands of England and most of Wales, founded in 1833.
